One hundred and twenty young IT whizz kids are taking part in a programming marathon at Warsaw’s National Stadium.

The participants, divided into 22 teams, have 24 hours to create apps or websites for handicapped and elderly people.

Billed as Hackathon Plus, the event is organised by the investment ministry. Investment Minister Jerzy Kwieciński said: “New technologies provide new opportunities. We want such solutions to be available for the handicapped, too.”

He added that 12 percent of Polish society are people with disabilities, while 16 percent are elderly citizens.

Among the solutions created by the programmers is a handicapped-oriented search engine for rail connections and adapted public buildings.

The winners of the hackathon are to receive PLN 20,000 (EUR 4,667, USD 5,305). Kwieciński said a special programme will be launched to finance the development of the award-winning apps.,Programming-marathon-held-in-Polish-capital
