Poland expects billions from auction of 5G frequencies

An auction of frequencies for 5G mobile networks could see up to PLN 5 billion (EUR 1.17 bn, USD 1.29 bn) flowing into Polish state coffers next year, according to the country’s digital affairs minister.

Marek Zagórski said Poland’s Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) was expected to complete the auction of fifth-generation telecommunication network frequencies by the middle of next year.

"These funds would flow into the budget in 2020," he added. 5G is a new telecommunications standard that will enable transmission speeds 50 or even 100 times faster than the current 4G network.

The new technology is expected to accelerate the development of the internet of things, telemedicine, autonomous vehicles and smart cities. The European Commission wants 5G coverage for at least one city in every EU member state by 2020, and all major cities and key transport routes in the bloc to be covered by 2025, Polish state news agency PAP has reported.
