Climate summit could lead to 'fair transformation of economies': president

The Polish president has said he hopes that talks at a major climate change summit in his country this December will result in a “declaration of solidarity”.

President Andrzej Duda was speaking in Rome at a session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. He said that solidarity could lead to a “fairer transformation of global economies”.

In December, the southern Polish city of Katowice – in the heart of Poland’s coal mining industry – is to host COP24, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Duda said that Katowice was an example of a city where “fair climate change transformation” was taking place successfully, and where economic growth and prosperity among locals was hand-in-hand with “a more balanced future”.

“Though implementing daring policies on climate, biodiversity, and fighting desertification, we will give future generations a safer and more balanced world,” Duda added.

Tens of thousands of politicians, scientists, activists and businesspeople from 190 countries are expected to attend the COP24 summit in Katowice.

Poland has hosted the annual climate change conference twice already, in Warsaw in 2013 and in Poznań in 2008.
