65,000 foreigners work in Slovakia

Most come from Serbia and Romania.

The number of foreigners working in Slovakia is growing. In October, there were about 65,000 foreigner workers, up by 17,000 compared to last year, the SITA newswire reported.

However, the increase was not as significant when compared to September, since the number of foreigners rose by only 810.

Most come from Serbia and Romania

The majority of people from abroad working in Slovakia come from Serbia. Currently, there are about 15,000 Serbians employed in the Slovak firms, up by 3,000 year-on-year, according to the data published by the Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family (ÚPSVaR).

Romanians come second with slightly more than 10,000 of them in the Slovak labour market, which is an annual increase by 2,000 Romanian workers. Ukraine follows next, with about 10,000 people working in the country. About 6,200 Ukrainians came to work in Slovakia during the past 12 months, SITA reported.

Western Slovakia takes the lead

Almost one-third of foreigners worked in Bratislava by the end of October 2018, with 20,500 foreigners employed in one of the five city districts.

Second comes the Trnava district, where 9,800 foreigners worked, while 2,500 foreigners worked in Malacky (Bratislava Region). On the other hand, only nine foreigners worked in Medzilaborce (Prešov Region), SITA reported.
